Driving Rain Brought A Driving Trade

Buyers out in force, and a slightly greener countryside drove up a storm in the store cattle ring. Numbers of cattle starting to come forward in abundance with the back end just around the corner however a strong trade for all types today increased vendors confidence all round. Store bulls sold to £2550 for Charolais from JC Walling, the same good home selling others to £2120. Heifers topped at £2160 for Angus from JG & BJ Escolme, the same home selling others to £2120. Angus also topped the bullock section reaching £2160 from G Cuthbertson. A further pair of Angus bullocks from A & B Pickthall hit £2080, the same home sold Limousin bullocks to £2060. Calves

142 calves forward at J36 today with trade for the top end as dear as ever.

Bull calves to £1300 for a suckler bred limousin from SH & PI Bowes, Barrow in Furness who sold others at £1100 & £1060. British Blue bull calves sold to £1140 for Bambers Farm, Thurnham who sold others at £1010. Charolais calves well bid for with JH Towers, Tunstall Hall selling bulls to £1120, £1100, £1000 & £990, with 20 bull calves over £900. Month old bulls to £690 from HJ Robinson, Elm Tree & £650 from TK Robinson, Greaves Farm. With Black & White bulls to £310 for JW & TE Sharp, Lyth.

Heifer calves to £940 for Limousins from SH & PI Bowes, Barrow In Furness with British Blues to £790 on 3 occasions from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth & Bambers Farm, Thurnham. Hereford heifers to £670 from Bambers Farm, Thurnham with Angus at the same price from AR & S Bell, Ulverston. Month old heifers to £590 for Angus from AE Luffman, Sedbergh or £580 for British Blue from HJ Robinson, Elm Tree with Beef Shorthorn to £470 at 3 weeks old.

A larger show of stirks today and a stronger trade also.

Buyers were certainly a plenty for all ranges of cattle with plenty of good quality dairy x Blues, Herefords, Angus and Charolais.
Topping today’s trade was a belting pen of Angus steers at £1540 from AM Smith, Burton in Kendal. Plenty of pens came close with the same firm having pens at £1470. Other notable prices were from MW & H Hodgson with a quality Blue steer making £1460, matching this price for the same goods were J & L Law who had a quality run of Blue & Charolais cattle, topping at £1460 and averaging £1380.
